When I was younger before the photography bug bit me I was a rock hound. I collected all kinds of rocks, minerals, and even fossils. So even when I began to study photography I still had this interest in rocks and minerals. I photographed these two geodes along with some other mineral crystals. This photo was taken in 1975 in my basement studio. I had just bought my view camera at this time. The camera was a 4x5" Calumet view camera with a 22" bellows The lens was a Caltar 215mm f/4.8 lens. The film was 4x5" Kodak Ektacolor Professional type L, Tungsten. In 1975 this film was a high quality professional color negative print film processed in Kodak C-22. The film and process is no longer in use. I used a very hard lighting here to add contrast. On the right side I had a quartz flood that had a barn door on it so I could focus the light in certain areas. I had positioned two mini-spots with barn doors one on the left and another close to my main flood light. The placement of the lights...
Photography has been my life. I was always curious about what went on inside the camera and in the darkroom. Photography was something mysterious--a little bit of magic plus a little bit of science. It was alchemy. I ventured forth to turn silver halide crystals into gold. Like all photographers I started out as a hobbyist. From home darkrooms to industrial photo labs and in various studios and on-location as a commercial photographer. I have assisted many professional photographers, worked in various labs and studios.
