Description
Here is an agate formed Ammonite snail fossil I photographed. The specimen measures about 1 ¼” length. I photographed this fossil on a copy stand so I could look directly down at it.
The camera I used was a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8 macro lens. For lighting I used off camera electronic flash. My Nikon SB-600 speedlight was positioned into a small 5 ½” x 8” white soft box which was positioned above and behind the subject at a low angle.
The fossil was set on a piece of glass above a black background so the fossil looks like it is floating in the air. The exposure was f/16 to give added depth of field. The flash synch speed was 1/200 sec and the ISO for maximum resolution was 100.
